Forbes Travel Guide performs independent, incognito inspections of all hotels we rate. This is what we paid when we stayed at this hotel.

Rates can vary widely by room type and season. "We Paid" is intended to give a general sense of price, but you might find considerably different rates for your trip.

When we book, we aim for the optimum season for the destination, but we avoid holidays and major public events, when prices are highest. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic.

We take advantage of promotional rates, when possible. That means the rate you see above might have included other benefits, such as spa or meal credits.

Despite its location in a high-end, trendy neighborhood in the city center, The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona provides a quiet and soothing respite from the bustling Passeig de Gràcia outside.

Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola helped create the ambience by using colors such as black and white, and mixing materials such as wood and malachite. The common areas are dark and atmospheric: the spa-only lap pool backlit with a deep green, the steam room with tiled loungers and the relaxation room’s tan spa beds invite you to sink deeper into relaxation.

The Barcelona spa offers excellent facial and beauty treatments by the Swiss brand Valmont.
Experience the innovative HairSpa by Miriam Quevedo. The one-of-a-kind service begins with an iMicro-camera analysis to understand your hair and scalp needs. Next, you’ll have a customized ritual to rejuvenate your hair and scalp. Then you will enjoy a pampering scalp, arm and hand massage followed by a blowout.
Mandarin Oriental’s signature spa therapies were crafted through consultations with specialists in traditional Chinese medicine and masters of aromatherapy. Treatments combine hands-on bodywork with the therapeutic benefits of custom-blended essential oils.
All Signature Treatments and Journeys begin with a relaxing foot ritual, a symbol of you leaving the temporal world behind as you begin your spa experience.
Some treatments utilize Mandarin Oriental’s signature product line developed specifically for the hotel by world-renowned brand Aromatherapy Associates. The natural oils and body scrubs are all paraben free.

Things to Know

If you book the spa’s Time Rituals, which encourage you to reserve time rather than specific treatments, your service can be tailor-made to meet your specific wishes and state of mind.
You’ll be advised to arrive about 45 minutes prior to your treatment to allow for time to unwind in the Oriental steam room and relaxation area.
Personal training and private yoga sessions are available upon request in the fitness center.

The Treatments

The Valmont facials are a luxurious top-seller. The renewing treatments purify, balance and refine the skin texture.
The 90-minute Oriental Meridian Massage focuses on pressure points and the directional flow of the qi in the body.
Another popular choice is the 50-minute reflexology massage. The massage starts from the toes, moving up to the knees and focusing on muscular flexibility, joint mobility, blood circulation. It helps remove toxins from the body.

The Facilities

Take advantage of the Oriental stem room and dimly lit relaxation room before or after your treatment.
A 39-foot pool provides a place for some peaceful laps. The green-hued swimming hole is dimly lit, allowing for some extra Zen.
A state-of-the-art 24-hour fitness center provides the perfect place to work up a sweat. Enjoy complimentary amenities including headphones, towels and chilled drinks.
