L'oscar London

A decadent design gem in London’s Bloomsbury
VERIFIED LUXURY
L'oscar London offers a striking fusion of theatrical glamour and luxury, set within a stunning Edwardian neo-baroque building that once served as the London headquarters of the Baptist Church in Holborn. The opulent interiors, envisioned by French maximalist Jacques Garcia, renowned for his work at Hotel Costes in Paris and La Mamounia in Marrakech, complement the building’s grand architecture. Garcia’s design honors the building’s arts and crafts heritage and features beautifully restored oak paneling, intricate plasterwork, stained glass and original fireplaces.

Located centrally, the hotel is within walking distance of iconic landmarks such as the Royal Opera House and the British Museum, with Covent Garden and the West End just a short stroll away. It’s the perfect base for those wishing to explore London’s theaters, museums and galleries, as well as its vibrant shopping, nightlife, and dining scenes.

As far as hotel amenities, guests receive complimentary access to Gym Box Holborn, which is a two-minute walk away. La Muña, the first U.K. location of the Japanese-Peruvian restaurant by Michel Reybier Hospitality, will open in the hotel’s domed chapel this year. The menu will celebrate the vibrant flavors of both cuisines, offering dishes like beefsteak teriyaki with truffle sauce, red tuna ceviche and black cod marinated in Saikyo miso.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • As you wander through the hotel, you can’t help but be drawn in by its playful charm. Theatrical interiors, inspired by Victorian poet and playwright Oscar Wilde, transport you to a world of glamour. Rich velvet furnishings, gilded details and delicate hummingbird motifs create an opulent atmosphere, while a striking birdcage chandelier in the stairwell adds to the drama.
  • The opulent L'oscar Restaurant attracts a sophisticated crowd of well-heeled Londoners, visitors and hotel guests alike. Inspired by an ancient Venetian café, the space is adorned with deep purple velvet banquettes and walls and ceilings lined with mirrors. Breakfast is served here, followed by bistro-style lunch, traditional afternoon tea and intimate dinners. For late-night cocktails, head to the Onyx Bar.
  • Guests can expect the elegance of French hospitality with a hint of flamboyance. Staff addresses you by name, offering a warm welcome and slick, attentive service that ensures every whim is taken care of.
  • The boutique hotel is well situated in the heart of London’s buzziest district. It’s a 10-minute to the cobbled streets and gorgeous boutiques of Covent Garden, as well as several West End theaters and Somerset House, a fantastic venue for exhibitions, concerts and in winter, an outdoor ice rink. Both the British Museum and the inspiring Sir John Soane's Museum are also nearby.
  • Two drawing rooms on the ground floor provide a welcoming space to unwind with a book, enjoy a coffee or simply watch the world go by as you plan your day. Shelves lined with vintage books offer plenty to keep you engaged.

The Rooms

  • There are 39 boudoir-like rooms, each with its own distinct character, varying in size, shape and decorative details. Every room is adorned with rich, jewel-toned walls, ranging from the soft duck-egg blue of the Deluxe Room to the deep ruby red of the Junior Suite Grand.
  • Theatrical touches are a mainstay across all accommodations, from butterfly taps to Lalique lamps. Each room or suite is brought to life with its own sense of character, whether it be oversized tapestry headboards, luxurious silk fabrics, oil paintings or patterned wallpaper.
  • Rooms may be full of whimsy, but they are thoughtfully equipped with practical elements. Plush Icelandic eiderdown duvets, yoga mats, access to PressReader and desks that cleverly double as dressing tables with flip-up mirrors ensure both comfort and convenience.
  • The L’oscar Suite is the best room in the London hotel, spanning 700 square feet, evoking the grandeur of a royal French residence. It boasts regal-looking fabrics, a Royal Doulton fireplace and a separate lounge area with large windows offering expansive views over Southampton Row. You will want to linger in the spacious bathroom’s standalone, deep-soaking bathtub and all-marble walk-in shower.
