Gramercy Tavern

A beloved space cooking with seasonal grace
VERIFIED LUXURY
Charming Gramercy Tavern is self-assured without being flashy and comfortable without being dull, making it a favorite upscale dining choice for everyone from expense-account suits to fashionistas and serious foodies wondering if the Chioggia beets came from the farmers market down the street (they probably did). The long bar is a perfect perch from which to enjoy the à la carte menu, plates of cheese and wines by the glass.

Interior design enthusiasts will appreciate the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star establishment as well. Gramercy Tavern offers a rustic and contemporary take on the classic American tavern.

You will enter inside through the Tavern, located at the front of this New York restaurant. Here, you will find a lively bar with high wood-beamed ceilings, a wood burning oven and a variety of colorful and fragrant seasonal floral arrangements. The walls are covered with paintings and photographs featuring horses, stars, trees and food, all early American antiques that mirror the rest of the restaurant’s décor.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • At Gramercy Tavern, everything on the menu is in a class by itself. If you are eating in the main dining room, prepare your palate for a delectable three-course prix fixe meal with a range of options.
  • While there are plenty of dishes our waitress was eager to recommend, she couldn’t help but rave about executive chef Michael Anthony’s impressive commitment to the use of local produce in determining the dishes he puts on the menu.
  • The service at Gramercy Tavern is in a class all its own. Upon arrival, you’ll be properly greeted and kept informed on the status of your reservation and notified exactly when the table would be ready. Once seated, expect a waitress who’s not only patient, but also impressively knowledgeable.
Things to Know
  • Though natural light comes into the Tavern during the day through the large windows, at night, the restaurant relies on recessed lighting to softly illuminate the restaurant and set the mood.
  • Reservations can be tough to come by this New York classic but you should call 212-477-0777 or make a reservation on the restaurant’s website. Gramercy Tavern welcomes reservations at 10 a.m., seven days a week, up to 28 days in advance.
  • The private dining room can comfortably seat 22 people, but room can be made for a maximum of 25 people. There is a single, stately leaflet table in the center of the room, crafted by Maine artisan Greg Lipton. The table can be expanded to accommodate a range of party sizes.
  • No matter how much you study the menu in advance of your visit, be forewarned—the daily specials at the New York restaurant are always worth a look.
