      Your Essential Park City Guide
      By Forbes Travel Guide Inspector

      January 19, 2018

No matter how you frame it, Park City is a picture-perfect destination any time of year. Imagine a four-season resort area with skiing, snowboarding, golf, tennis, water sports and mountain biking, then add an element of Wild West meets Hollywood glamour, and you’ve got a luxe adventure lover’s paradise.

What to pack for a trip to Park City

No matter what you pack for your trip to Park City, keep it relaxed and comfortable — even in clubs and restaurants, the dress code is lax.

When packing, think in layers — lighter in the summer, warmer in the winter. In the mountains temperatures can drop quickly at night, so although the sun may be beating down during the day, you’ll likely need a light cardigan or jacket come sundown even during the warmest months of year.

Because the city is located at a high altitude — Main Street is 7,000 feet above sea level — the sun does damage more quickly. Be sure to pack sunscreen, sunglasses and a water bottle, as the altitude can make you feel dehydrated or light-headed.

Also, don’t forget a camera. Park City has incredible vistas everywhere you turn.

The best time to visit Park City

Park City’s prime time is the winter, when the mountains are chock-full of fresh powder and the city is crawling with skiers and snowboarders. Snowmobiling, sleigh rides and dog sled tours are other popular draws during the coldest months.

During the holidays, the town is aglow with lights and flush with festivities. The city is at its busiest in January when it hosts the world-renowned Sundance Film Festival and celebrities and filmmakers descend upon the resort town.

Those who want to enjoy luxury accommodations on a budget would do well to visit during the summer season, when rates are slashed at most area resorts and hotels. Restaurant tables are easier to come by and streets are less crowded, but there are still activities aplenty, such as hiking, mountain biking and the Park City Food and Wine Classic.

Should visitors rent a car in Park City?

A rental car isn’t essential in Park City and, in fact, can sometimes make your trip more stressful. Driving conditions can become treacherous depending on the severity of a snowstorm, so if you do plan on having a car during a winter visit, it’s recommended to rent a vehicle equipped with four-wheel drive.

Located a short 35-mile drive from the Salt Lake City International Airport, Park City is accessible via a private or shared shuttle ride. Once in town, the free citywide public transportation stops at nearly every imaginable destination and many hotels offer their own complimentary in-town shuttle service for guests.
