Hotel Mediterraneo Sorrento

Cliffside chic by the sea
VERIFIED LUXURY
On the edge of the Bay of Naples and Sorrento, Hotel Mediterraneo Sorrento serves up cliffside calm with Mediterranean glamour, and some of the best sunset views on the coast. Originally built in 1912 as a private villa, the property was transformed after WWII by Antonietta “Nonna Etta” Lauro, sister of legendary shipping magnate and Naples mayor Achille Lauro, into a luxury hotel. Its 21st century incarnation pays homage to its art deco origins in a beautifully restored family-run hotel that leans into contemporary luxury.

With its crisp nautical palette and art deco-inflected design, the 61 rooms at Hotel Mediterraneo strike a graceful balance between coastal charm and contemporary elegance. Parquet floors, deep blues and white linens echo the colors of the sea, while clean lines and tailored details lend a timeless feel.

Elegant yet unassuming, Hotel Mediterraneo is a serene escape just beyond Sorrento’s bustle. It’s the kind of place where you could easily spend your entire stay, savoring panoramic meals at the rooftop restaurants or basking in wellness from land to sea. Lemon-scented gardens surround a tranquil pool, while a private tunnel leads to a floating beach club, and an onsite wellness spa provides more ways to unwind. This is Sorrento at its most effortless.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Vista Sky Bar is a must at golden hour with the Bay of Naples backdrop. Sometimes you even see Capri. Show-stopping sunsets become a party with champagne, DJs and an incredible view. For a more calm ambiance, try the equally jaw-dropping vista from Vesuvio Panoramic Restaurant.
  • The rooms radiate art deco glamour, a mix of Old World charm and modern style. Think brass details, velvet accents, terrazzo-inspired floors and custom lighting that evokes the golden age of Mediterranean travel, with just a touch of yacht chic.
  • Vesuvio Panoramic Restaurant is rooted in Campania’s rich culinary traditions with a little fun. Nibble on the carefully platedNeapolitan seafood salad — with gulf prawns, mussels, calamari and seaweed wafers; a housemade pasta like cappellacci stuffed with red prawns, local potato cream and provola cheese sauce; and mains like lobster, seabass and chicken.
  • Hidden in the hotel’s tuff caves, Lepietre Cozy Spa is a refuge. Under a starry sky with some original tuff stone walls, it features a tulipwood sauna, Jacuzzi and hammam, alongside locally inspired treatments like a hot stone massage using stones from the sea and the Luce di Sorrento anti-aging facial that features Sorrento lemons, olive oil and sea water.
  • Hotel Mediterraneo makes it easy to get into the water. There is an outdoor pool surrounded by a lush Mediterranean garden and citrus grove, but you’re here for the sea. Take a private elevator down to a subterranean stone tunnel that leads to a floating beach club, complete with loungers and a seaside restaurant.

Things to Know

  • The Monti family makes every stay at its elegant hotel feel personal. As well-connected Sorrentini, they know everyone and everything, and they share it with their guests, while their multilingual staff handles everything from Amalfi boat charters to last-minute gelato-fueled escapes.
  • Set in the Sant’Agnello neighborhood, just a short stroll from the historic center of Sorrento, the luxury hotel is close enough to enjoy the town, but far enough to avoid the crowds and cruise ship chaos. It’s walkable to Sorrento but blissfully removed.
  • If waking up to the Gulf of Naples is on your wish list, request an upper-level room with a balcony or sea vista, like the Junior Suite Sea View — it’s worth the upgrade. If traveling with children or friends, book the 646-square-foot Family Suite. Up to five guests fit comfortably in this ground-floor suite with a mezzanine, two bathrooms and a large balcony with partial sea vista.
  • Quite possibly the best breakfast in Sorrento is served at the hotel’s Vesuvio, where mornings unfold on a terrace that seems to hover above the sea. It’s all about sunrise views with a fresh sfogliatella, made-to-order eggs and an iced cappuccino.
