Amankora Thimphu

A courtyard retreat above Bhutan's capital
VERIFIED LUXURY
Set above Bhutan’s capital in the Motithang area, Amankora Thimphu occupies a different role within Aman’s five-lodge circuit, trading wilderness immersion for a measured introduction to Bhutan’s cultural side. While still tucked within a serene pine forest, the luxury Himalayan retreat sits within easy reach of Tashichho Dzong, the National Memorial Chorten and the institutions that shape modern Bhutan.

As with Aman’s other Bhutan properties, simplicity is key here. Architecture draws from traditional dzong forms, with enclosed courtyards and thick walls that create a sense of privacy. Days tend to revolve around guided visits to monasteries, museums and markets, with plenty of time for meditation and relaxation in between. Meals have a Western and Indian flavor and service is precise and knowledgeable, particularly when it comes to navigating government sites and local customs.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Each of Amankora Thimphu’s 16 suites features a traditional bukhari wood-burning stove positioned between the bedroom and bathroom. During evening turndown, staffers light the fire and arrange pinecones alongside fresh wood, creating an intimate, mountain-cabin atmosphere that's particularly welcome at 7,000-foot elevation.
  • The aptly named Forest and Stream Dinner offers private alfresco dining beside a trickling stream in the woods. A personal chef prepares dishes over an open flame while you dine surrounded only by nature — no other guests, just the smell of pines and the sound of crackling fire.
  • Complimentary laundry service extends beyond clothing to include boot cleaning after muddy excursions. Given Bhutan's mountain terrain and frequent hikes to monasteries, this practical luxury means your trekking boots return spotless without request or additional charge.
  • The spa's traditional hot stone bath uses river boulders heated for hours, then gradually lowered into wooden tubs infused with medicinal Khempa herbs. This ancient Ayurvedic treatment is the spa's signature offering, believed to release minerals that relieve joint pain and restore internal balance.
  • Architecture prioritizes enclosure over views, with inward-facing courtyards that block city noise and create a controlled sense of calm. It’s noticeably quieter inside than the setting suggests.

Nearby Attractions

  • Sitting high above Thimphu, the historic Phajoding Monastery rewards those who hike up its sloping hillside with panoramic views and a tranquil atmosphere.
  • The lodge arranges guided hikes to Dodedrak village's 12th-century temple, where resident monks often join guests for lunch. This isn't a tourist photo opportunity but an authentic exchange, sharing stories and meals with monks in an active monastery that few visitors ever see.
  • Built in memory of Bhutan’s third king, the National Memorial Chorten is one of the city’s most popular religious sites. A visit to this white stupa offers a window into everyday Bhutanese devotional practice as locals circumambulate the structure with prayer wheels.
  • Get a peek at Bhutan’s unique national animal — the takin is a woolly goat-and-cow-like hybrid — at Motithang Takin Preserve, just a six-minute drive or 30-minute hike from the Thimphu hotel.
  • Take a trek into central Thimphu to browse boutiques and street stalls for locally crafted souvenirs. Simply ask Amakora’s staff members, and they’ll gladly whip up a list of their favorite stops.
