Kimpton BEM Budapest

A storybook stay in historic Buda
VERIFIED LUXURY
Set along the quieter, more residential Buda side of the Danube, Kimpton BEM Budapest offers a refreshingly hip alternative to the city’s traditional palace hotels.

Housed within a restored 19th-century mansion near the Castle District, the 127-room retreat eschews the expected Old World grandeur with an atmosphere filtered through the whimsical imagination of Dutch designer Marcel Wanders. His maximalist interiors draw on Hungarian folklore with mythic motifs, sculptural flourishes and nature-inspired, jewel-toned palettes, while guest rooms dial things back with a calm yet still vibrant aesthetic.

Public spaces are designed for socializing in classic Kimpton fashion, from the lively lobby bar to Mediterranean-Hungarian restaurant Agos, and a rooftop bar for sunset cocktails overlooking the city’s rooftops. With the Danube, historic thermal baths and many of the city’s major sights within easy reach, the hotel manages to feel both cosmopolitan and still pleasantly removed from the crowds.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Kimpton BEM Budapest feels as though you've stepped into a storybook, thanks largely to the eye of Marcel Wanders, who drew inspiration from Hungarian folklore, particularly the tales of the Golden Stag and the mythical Turul Bird. The narrative begins in reception, with oval desks clad in purple and green mosaics, hand-painted murals adorning the walls, and a striking golden stag sculpture encased in a small atrium.
  • The luxury hotel occupies a quieter pocket of Buda that feels more local than touristy, yet remains well-connected. Must-see attractions like the Castle District, Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church are all within a 25-minute walk, and the tram stop is right across the street.
  • True to Kimpton’s boutique ethos, the hotel encourages guests to mingle rather than retreat to their rooms. A complimentary daily Social Hour at Bar HUSO, held from 5 to 6 p.m., pairs a free drink with a casual atmosphere that invites plenty of conversation.
  • The hotel's restaurants and bars feel just as playful as the rest of the property. Agos is bright and light-filled, anchored by towering columns that double as planters, while Fennen Skybar crowns the hotel with a glass-enclosed rooftop bar that counts as one of Budapest's most atmospheric spots for a cocktail.
  • Complimentary cruiser bikes — complete with front baskets, locks and helmets — make it easy to explore Budapest on two wheels. The Danube's extensive cycling paths lead to attractions such as the historic Central Market Hall (Nagy Vásárcsarnok) in just 15 minutes.

The Rooms

  • Rooms and suites continue the Budapest hotel's imaginative design, favoring bold character over restrained minimalism. Think walls painted in oversized poppies and tulips — recurring motifs in Hungarian folklore— or crashing waves inspired by Lake Balaton, one of the country's most beloved holiday destinations.
  • Most of the 127 rooms follow one of two distinct color stories, either enveloped in deep sapphire blues or lush botanical greens. Each palette carries through from the walls to the custom carpeting, where fluid abstract patterns are intended to mimic moss, water, or forest undergrowth, reinforcing the hotel’s connection to the natural world.
  • Carrying the same color saturation into the bathrooms, vibrant mosaic tiling creates a gorgeous contrast to sleek contemporary fixtures. Every room category comes well-equipped with spacious walk-in rain showers, Balmain bath amenities and adjustable underfloor heating — a particularly welcome touch during Budapest's colder months.
  • The entry-level rooms start at a relatively compact 216 square feet but are thoughtfully designed to make the most of the space, with king-sized beds and ribbed timber credenzas providing ample storage. Premium Rooms provide a more generous sense of space (starting from 280 square feet) and may also feature a balcony or Danube views, while Studio Suites upgrade the experience with extra space and a freestanding bathtub.
  • The suites provide even more space to appreciate the design. The 538-square-foot Cosmos Suite and 1,152-square-foot Observatory Suite both embrace a celestial theme through star-inspired rugs, artwork and subtle cove lighting, while bespoke shelving lined with books on the Hubble legacy and a telescope by the window continue the thread in a refined way.
