The Cellars-Hohenort

Constantia Valley’s luxurious country escape
VERIFIED LUXURY

Nestled within Cape Town’s leafy Constantia Valley,The Cellars-Hohenort has a setting out of a fairytale, complete with resident ducklings and a secret garden.

Combining classic charm with contemporary luxury, the 17th-century property still showcases historic features, such as an Oregon pine staircase in the cellar built using wood from the structure’s original roof and a massive exposed beam in the lounge.

The 51 classically styled guest rooms and suites provide breathtaking views of both Table Mountain and the property’s sprawling, nine-acre gardens. Decorated by late South African hotelier Liz McGrath, The Cellars-Hohenort embraces the traditional nature of historic Constantia Homestead.

Lush surroundings; Cape Dutch architecture; warm, unobtrusive hospitality; and top-draw culinary make this an idyllic country escape.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • While The Cellars-Hohenort’s location feels secluded, it’s close to attractions like the Constantia Winelands, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, Cape Point and Boulders Beach.
  • Inspired by the historic hotel's verdant gardens, classic country-style interiors don muted color palettes, plush carpets and traditional wallpaper. Floral fabrics and natural light streaming in through the windows and doors keep the indoor spaces bright and airy.
  • Two salt-water, solar-heated pools make it easy to soak up some South African sun. For vineyard views and chair-side service, head for the bigger Hohenort pool, but for privacy, visit the Cellars pool surrounded by a walled garden.
  • Rejuvenate mind, body and soul at Fresh Wellness Spa. Start your day with a Five Senses Signature Massage incorporating unique techniques, avocado and shea body butter, volcanic stones and bamboo sticks to relax tense muscles.
  • The Cape Town hotel boasts two fantastic eateries: the light-filled Conservatory, built around a massive oak tree, and Greenhouse, an acclaimed tasting menu concept inspired by local flavors.

Things to Know

  • The knowledgeable concierge team can assist with booking exciting activities, including Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and a Two Oceans Aquarium excursion. You also can take advantage of a complimentary daily scheduled V&A Waterfront transfer.
  • A small gym comes with all the necessary machines and free weights for a vacation workout, but we highly recommend expending some energy with a vigorous match on the tennis court or on a bike ride around the property.
  • Although the luxury hotel does not have a children’s club, it is most assuredly family-friendly and will happily organize and facilitate appropriate activities for little ones.

The Rooms

  • Spread over two white-washed Cape Dutch buildings, accommodations include Double Rooms, luxury suites and villas. Room rates include a welcome bottle of wine, daily breakfast and a complimentary minibar.
  • Each of the Luxury Double Rooms in the historic Hohenort Manor House has a verandah with loungers overlooking the picturesque gardens — you could not ask for a better place to enjoy a glass of excellent local wine.
  • Elegantly decorated suites offer a spacious lounge area, walk-in closet and large bathroom, featuring fluffy bathrobes, free-standing tubs and Molton Brown products.
  • The exclusive bi-level villas are ideal for families and friends traveling together. Nestled in beautiful gardens, the three-bedroom Madiba Villa (named after former South African president Nelson Mandela) boasts a large open-plan lounge and dining area, a fireplace for cold winter days and a private courtyard and swimming pool to keep you cool in summer.

The Restaurants

  • The Conservatory’s team (anchored by head chef Paul Nash) has created a menu focused on traditional favorites, including some of former owner Liz McGrath’s own recipes. Dishes include aged boland cheese soufflé, Cape Malay bobotie (a South African version of shepherd’s pie) and a decadent chocolate plate of passion fruit, dark chocolate fondant and white chocolate ice cream — a McGrath specialty.
  • Helmed by chef Farrel Hirsch, sleek Greenhouse features a modern interpretation of South African ingredients through a seasonally evolving Journey tasting menu. Wow your taste buds with dishes such as bokkoms-style (salted and dried) sea bass, the cheeky Which Came First? (teriyaki quail, egg and kimchi) and a seafood potjie (stew) of hake, blue prawn, samphire sea beans and wakame (seaweed) tapioca.
  • Before starting your culinary journey at the acclaimed Greenhouse, savor a signature Hibiscus and Fynbos Cosmopolitan at the contemporary Greenhouse Bar.
  • The elegant Martini Bar is the spot for high tea, an evening cocktail or a selection of Constantia Valley wines.
  • The Cellars-Hohenort’s talented pastry chefs create an indulgent daily high tea. Pair your brew (or glass of bubbles) with treats like roasted vegetable and goat cheese tarts, finger sandwiches and an array of sweet delights, including Madagascan chocolate cake, cupcakes and fresh fruit pavlovas.
