The Fontenay Hamburg

Hamburg’s urban hideaway
VERIFIED LUXURY

Tucked into Hamburg’s lush urban greenery, The Fontenay Hamburg is a hideaway like no other in the city. Thanks to its uniquely amorphous shape, the luxurious retreat boasts gorgeous views of nearby Lake Alster and the surrounding cityscape from every angle, meaning that there’s no bad place to hole up.

The striking hotel is a modern masterpiece, adding a distinctive flair to Hamburg’s historic skyline. Within its curved walls, The Fontenay offers all the contemporary comforts of an urban resort: light-filled accommodations, an indoor-outdoor infinity pool, a soothing spa and a handful of chic eateries overlooking the lake.

But the real highlight here is The Fontenay’s secluded location. Its address in the tony Rothenbaum neighborhood surrounded by trees and the shores of Lake Alster gives the luxury hotel an air of exclusivity without keeping you too far from the city’s top sights.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The Fontenay Hamburg’s striking design is a breath of fresh air from the city’s historic lakeside villas and boxy post-war architecture. Natural light and organic curved lines are the stars of the show here, made all the more enticing with a plethora of panoramic views.
  • The gorgeous sixth-floor Fontenay Spa offers a light-filled retreat above Hamburg’s surrounding trees. Settle in for an afternoon of pampering thanks to a Finnish panoramic sauna, an aroma-quartzite steam room, a slew of multi-sensory showers and a tranquil relaxation lounge overlooking Lake Alster.
  • A rooftop infinity pool provides a scenic spot for a morning dip or an afternoon of relaxation on the sun-dappled terrace.
  • The Fontenay’s rooftop is also home to a chic fine-dining venue and bar that afford stellar city views. Acclaimed restaurant Lakeside serves up contemporary French fare with international influences, while The Fontenay Bar focuses on modern mixology that can be enjoyed in atmospheric surroundings or on an airy terrace overlooking the water.
  • The Atrium Lounge is a chic gathering place in its own right, but it also branches off into three other unique hideaways. Stop into a stylish bar for wine and sweet treats, retreat to a private library stocked with more than 1,000 carefully curated volumes or unwind in the smoker’s den if cigars are your vice of choice.

The Look

  • German architect Jan Störmer designed The Fontenay Hamburg to blend into its stunning natural surroundings. The “hotel in the park” concept embraces curves and amorphous shapes to give the building an organic feel.
  • The luxury hotel’s clean, wide facade; fluid lines; and ceramic building materials are meant to reflect nearby Lake Alster, while its rounded shape allows for cityscape panoramas from every room.
  • The three-story, teardrop-shaped atrium is a showstopper anchored by a bespoke 20-foot tree-branch-inspired light fixture by Dutch firm Brand van Egmond. Custom furnishings like an 82-foot circular sofa and an immense rug from Hong Kong’s House of Tai Ping were specifically designed to fit the hotel’s unique shape.
  • Rooms capitalize on The Fontenay’s lakeside location with floor-to-ceiling windows, furnished balconies and pale parquet floors that reflect natural light throughout the space.
  • The Hamburg hotel makes the most of its lakeside address with seemingly endless walls of windows found throughout the 130-room property. Rare windowless walls are thoughtfully adorned with works by Peruvian artist Antonio Maro and photographer Jaschi Klein.
