The River Lee

A stylish Cork escape
VERIFIED LUXURY

With its prime riverside location, stylish interiors and proximity to Cork’s best attractions, The River Lee stands out as one of the city’s top hotels. The waterside terrace — perfect for an ice-cold Aperol spritz in summer or an Irish coffee in winter — takes full advantage of the scenic setting.

This is the kind of hotel that always has something exciting on the calendar, whether it’s oyster-and-champagne pairings, a jazz weekend or a curated itinerary created by a local tastemaker who knows all the best spots.

Refurbished in 2019, the rooms are understated yet elegant, featuring neutral textiles, plush duck-down duvets and a sweet touch of Irish chocolates at turndown. But what truly sets The River Lee apart is its warm, genuine and endlessly welcoming staff, who embody quintessential Corkonian hospitality.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • As with all Doyle Collection hotels, the interiors were overseen by chairwoman Bernie Gallagher, who has an impeccable sense of style. Bold jewel tones, art deco touches and plush seating bring the restaurants and public spaces to life, while the rooms exude a more subtle elegance.
  • Opt for a Deluxe room to enjoy sweeping views of the river and hills through floor-to-ceiling windows, plus access to the Executive Lounge, a quiet space offering complimentary drinks and snacks.
  • To help you make the most of your stay, the luxury hotel collaborates with local insiders who know every corner of Cork. These cool hunters create guides and weekend itineraries, leading you to hidden gems like proper“old man pubs” and oft-overlooked flea markets.
  • Breakfast at The River Lee is one of the best in Cork, if not the country. Served in the light-filled Mirror Room, the buffet features Irish artisan cheeses, housemade breads, pastries and even a whole honeycomb to drizzle over organic Irish oatmeal. On the à la carte menu, find local ingredients in classic dishes, like eggs Benedict with Quigley’s smoked back bacon, or sautéed forest mushrooms on brioche. There’s even a vegan take on the full Irish.
  • Guests enjoy complimentary access to the adjoining NRG Health & Fitness, equipped with a state-of-the-art gym, sauna, steam room and full-length pool. Free fitness classes like spinning, Pilates and kettlebell training are also available.

The Restaurants

  • At many hotels, dining in feels like a missed opportunity to explore the city, but not at The River Lee. The onsite restaurants rank among Cork’s finest. The River Club Bar & Terrace offers a casual vibe, with the lush terrace being the most coveted on sunny days. It’s ideal for lunch or brunch, while evenings shift to cocktails and small plates like smoked Gubbeen mac and cheese and tasting boards brimming with local finds from the nearby English Market.
  • For a heartier meal, The Grill Room serves up a sleek, moody ambiance with curved leather banquette seating, deep turquoise walls and a menu that sings with local flavors. The star dishes are those from the robata grill, such as the Cork ribeye served with a choice of sauce, including a pepper sauce infused with Jameson. On Sundays, the Roast Club is a great introduction to Ireland’s Sunday lunch tradition, featuring sharing plates of steak, chicken and lamb with all the trimmings.
  • If you’re looking for a refreshment, grab a seat at the Cork hotel bar and dive into the extensive cocktail menu. The friendly mixologists are happy whip up something based on your preferences, though you can’t go wrong with a sweet cherry whiskey sour or a signature G&T. The bar has an impressive selection of zero- and low-alcohol drinks, too.
