At Hotel Okura Kyoto Okazaki Bettei, traditional Kyoto craftsmanship is imbued in every aspect of your stay. Opened in 2022 beside Higashi Honganji Okazaki Betsuin, the 60-room hotel was designed with GO ON, a collective of six local creatives, with details unfolding along the path from the entrance to the guest floors. A handwoven, copper-wire light fixture greets arrivals, while corridor lights marking the rooms take their cues from Kaikado’s tea canisters.

Inside, the mountain-villa-inspired rooms pair Nishijin-ori fabric by Hosoo, woven to resemble light on water, with shelving supported by Kitayama cedar logs. The same approach continues at Nouvelle Epoque, where French cuisine is served beside the hotel’s Japanese garden, with bamboo work and Asahiyaki ceramics among the furnishings. The setting reinforces the connection to traditional Kyoto, with heritage sites such as Nanzen-ji, Heian Jingu and the Philosopher’s Walk just steps from your front door.

The 60 rooms range from 344 to more than 700 square feet and include Nespresso machines, Bose Bluetooth speakers, 55-inch 4K TVs, air-purifying humidifiers and Japanese tea bowls. The 753-square-foot Bettei Suite adds a private balcony facing Okazaki Betsuin temple.
The hotel’s morning spread brings in ingredients from Miyama, a mountain village north of Kyoto, through locally made yogurt and seasonal produce.
Nouvelle Epoque blends Kyoto ingredients with the hotel group's French culinary tradition in a 10-course chef's menu that changes with the seasons.
During the day, the garden-facing lounge serves siphon-brewed coffee, light meals and seasonal sweets. In the evening, the garden lights come on, and the menu shifts to Japanese whiskies and creative cocktails.
Because the Kyoto hotel sits within the same precincts as Higashi Honganji Okazaki Betsuin, views often look onto the temple grounds and surrounding greenery. North-facing rooms look toward the garden and, in some categories, the gate of nearby Konkai Komyoji.

The Look

Hotel Okura Kyoto Okazaki Bettei’s open-plan arrival — the lobby, reception and elevator areas flow together without partitions — draws the eye toward the garden and creates a gradual transition from the entrance to the rooms.
Pulling the outdoors in, a lattice of individually finished bamboo pieces defines the elevator hall. Woven bamboo work appears again in Nouvelle Epoque alongside contemporary art.
Nouvelle Epoque brings Kyoto crafts to the dining experience through details like Asahiyaki ceramics, Nishijin-ori-inspired placemats and Kaikado tableware.
The private dining room at Nouvelle Epoque takes its cue from the hipped roofs of traditional Kyoto architecture, translating the form into a sculptural ceiling. A low window frames the garden.
Two seasonal gardens give the luxury hotel distinct moments throughout the year: Geishun Garden features plum and cherry trees in the springtime while Senshu Garden is planted for autumn color. Greenery from both is integrated into the property’s public spaces and select accommodations.
