Vakkaru Maldives

Barefoot luxury in a biodiversity hot spot
VERIFIED LUXURY

A secluded tropical retreat, the idyllic Vakkaru Maldives is home to a gloriously wide white-sand beach, two mesmerizing “blue holes,” a colorful house reef and lush jungle. Wander through the private island’s emerald interiors to admire thousands of swaying coconut palms, which give the resort its name (Vakkaru means“coconut timber” in the local language) and recall its former life as a coconut plantation.

As part of the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the marine life flourishes with turtles, rays, parrotfish and nurse sharks frequently spotted on the nearby reefs. Better yet, it’s just 35 minutes by boat to Hanifaru Bay, the famous manta ray hot spot.

Whether on the beach or over water, the113immaculately maintained villas and residences feel airy and contemporary, while rustic materials like stone, wood and thatch evoke a tropical atmosphere. Vakkaru is blessed with rare levels of privacy — even by Maldivian standards. Neighboring islands are mere dots on the horizon, ensuring uninterrupted ocean views and a sense of true escape.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Given its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve location teeming with marine life, the Maldives resort offers excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving on its house reef and beyond. Or opt to explore the water on a dolphin or sunset cruise, a glass kayaking or windsurfing adventure or a fishing excursion.
  • It not every day you find a wishing well at a resort. Dubbed “The Heart of Vakkaru,” this treasure was originally created by the island’s former caretaker, Moadhbe, and guests are encouraged to toss in a coin and make a wish before they leave.
  • Another highlight is the Jungle Cinema, a huge private movie screen framed by thatch and tropical foliage. During a private Jungle Dinner & Movie Experience, you can snack on popcorn and pizza while lounging on cozy bean bags under the stars.
  • Merana Spa features glass floor panels beneath the massage tables in its overwater treatment rooms, so you can watch colorful fish swimming below as expert hands knead away stress.
  • Underneath thatched roofs, the villas and residences provide spacious, understated and modern respites. Choose between overwater villas with hammocks that hang over the waves or family-friendly beach villas with terraces and daybeds. Many accommodations come with their own pool.
  • Give back to the Maldives by joining a coral planting activity. Guided by the resident marine biologist, you’ll use a special frame to connect new coral fragments to the house reef, helping to maintain its vibrant ecosystem.

The Restaurants

  • The atmospheric Onu restaurant is surrounded by lush jungle — a natural pairing for the Southeast Asian and South Asian-inspired dishes. Curved, cane-back chairs and reed lanterns reflect the Asian influences, while the open kitchen adds a touch of theater to your meal.
  • Vakku offers a classic toes-in-the-sand open-air dining experience, complete with honey-hued sunsets and a salty sea breeze. Feast on into juicy steaks and fresh, sustainably caught fish as the waves lap at the shore.
  • Vakkaru Reserve, the island’s wine cellar, has won multiple Wine Spectator awards for its expertly curated collection of 680 labels from 15 countries. You can enjoy intimate degustation menus or sommelier-guided wine tastings, or simply browse the floor-to-ceiling racks of rare finds.
  • The luxury resort’s organic farm supplies fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices to its restaurants and spa. For an authentic farm-to-table experience, savor a leisurely lunch under the swaying palms or join a cooking class where you’ll handpick ingredients from the garden and prepare them alongside a chef for a delightful meal.
