W Hoboken

A maritime hideaway across from Manhattan
VERIFIED LUXURY
Across the river from Manhattan, on the downtown Hoboken waterfront, W Hoboken occupies a 27-story metal-and-glass tower that looked startlingly modern when Gwathmey Siegel Kaufman Architects delivered it in 2009 — a sleek counterpoint to the brick-and-masonry low-rises lining the shore. Today, the hotel holds its presence and is the third in the W portfolio to complete the brand’s top-to-bottom evolution, a transformation led by design firm AvroKO that trades the label’s old party-house reputation for something more layered, more grown-up and distinctly of its place.

The through-line is connectivity — to Manhattan, of course, which glitters just across the Hudson, and between guests themselves. W Hoboken leans into its self-styled “sixth borough” identity with a maritime sensibility pulled from the waterfront: ship anchors, lighthouse forms and the industrial echoes of the city’s old rail yards and warehouses. The result is a hotel built around gathering, where a once-rowdy address has matured into a polished social club with skyline views from nearly every window.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The transformed Living Room is the beating heart of the property, shifting from a daytime, coffee-sipping co-working lounge to a DJ-driven scene on Thursday and Friday nights. A wall of metal mesh tubes threads through the space in a nod to Hoboken’s historic train tracks, while the bar’s signature red arch echoes the city’s curved architecture.
  • Tucked behind what was once an art-gallery door, Sushi by Bou operates as the Hoboken hotel’s speakeasy — an intimate omakase counter where guests arrive a half-hour early for cocktails and light bites before settling in for a tasting. The room’s playful design nods to New Jersey’s vibrant music heritage.
  • Halifax, the waterfront restaurant helmed by chef Seadon Shouse, serves Northeastern farm-and-coastal cuisine sourced largely from farmers, fishermen and artisans stretching from Delaware up to its Nova Scotian namesake. The saffron rigatoni with local lobster and coral butter has held its place on the menu since the restaurant opened.
  • A rare patch of green for urban Hoboken, the hotel’s lawn hosts a full calendar of community programming — yoga and Pilates sessions, weekend food trucks from local bakeries and coffee shops, and movie nights staged with beanbags and a pop-up screen.
  • The Tequila & Margarita Experience walks guests through the spirit’s backstory and explores rotating seasonal flavor profiles before they craft two margaritas of their own.

Things to Know

  • Thanks to the building’s angled, triangular footprint, roughly 80% of rooms look out onto the Manhattan skyline or the Hudson, with sightlines running from the George Washington Bridge down to the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
  • The onsite Woodhouse Day Spa is a 5,742-square-foot retreat known for its signature Quiet Room and customized massages and facials. Note that the luxury hotel has no pool.
  • FIT, the brand’s fitness center, is outfitted with Life Fitness and Peloton equipment, and a shared business center covers the basics.
  • W Hoboken is genuinely pet-friendly — the concierge keeps dog treats on hand.
  • The crowd shifts with the calendar: corporate during the week, then more social on weekends with weddings, b’nai mitzvah celebrations and families in town for a nearby college. The flexible event spaces span the entire second floor and accommodate hundreds of guests. The PATH and NJ Transit are within walking distance for the quick hop into Manhattan.
