Desert Rock Resort

A luxury retreat sculpted from stone
VERIFIED LUXURY
Desert Rock Resort rises — just barely — from one of Saudi Arabia’s most extraordinary settings, neatly concealed among the otherworldly Hejaz Mountains of the Red Sea region. Blink and you might miss this 64-key property, designed by renowned firm Oppenheim Architecture, which all but disappears into granite massifs sculpted over millennia, with suites tucked into caves and villas perched high above desert canyons.

Many of the resort’s experiences draw inspiration from the surrounding desert. Guests can hike through volcanic valleys, tackle climbing routes and ziplines, or simply unwind beside their private pool amid the rugged peaks. The spa follows suit, pairing treatments inspired by ancient wellness traditions with a private hammam, a rhassoul chamber for clay-and-steam rituals, and a Vichy shower for hydrotherapy.

Dining ranges from refined farm-to-table cuisine to casual Peruvian and Indian fare. And while alcohol isn’t served, a zero-proof bar showcases inventive mocktails, botanical infusions and specialty teas.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • While the setting lends itself naturally to adventure — think off-roading in eco-friendly ATVs and traversing rugged wadis on via ferrata routes fitted with cables and ladders — some of the Red Sea resort’s most rewarding experiences are the quieter ones. Learn the art of Areesh building, a traditional architectural technique that uses woven palm fronds, watch a falconry demonstration or settle in for a traditional Saudi coffee ceremony accompanied by local storytelling.
  • One of Desert Rock’s standout dining experiences, Nyra is led by acclaimed Turkish chef Osman Sezener, whose celebrated restaurant OD Urla helped pioneer Turkey’s farm-to-table movement. Here, Ottoman-inspired flavors meet contemporary techniques, with wood-fired meats, dry-aged meats and locally sourced ingredients showcased in dishes that are both rooted in tradition and refreshingly modern.
  • The Observatory — a secluded rooftop perch that’s well worth the climb — invites guests to reconnect with ancient skies through guided stargazing sessions and night hikes. By day, the space transforms into a serene wellness venue for sunrise yoga with a live DJ and sunset mocktails overlooking the dramatic mountain landscape.
  • The spa distinguishes itself with treatments inspired by the desert landscape and ancient wellness traditions. The Moonlight Meteorite Massage, for example, uses oils infused with meteorite extracts, while the indulgent Desert Rock Signature Ritual incorporates everything from a rhassoul clay body wrap to massages performed with 24-karat gold-plated stones and gua sha tools.
  • In a region where alcohol is not served, Mica reimagines the cocktail experience through creativity and technique rather than spirits. The sophisticated beverage program centers on house-made infusions, ferments, preserves and botanical extracts, transforming local ingredients into complex, layered drinks that rival traditional cocktails in depth and craftsmanship.

The Rooms

  • Every suite and villa comes with its own private pool, whether that’s a cliffside plunge, a sweeping infinity pool overlooking the desert or a larger ground-level oasis designed with families in mind. Guests staying in the villas also enjoy the services of a dedicated villa host, on hand to cater to every whim.
  • No two stays at the luxury hotel feel quite the same. You can choose from ground-level Wadi Villas surrounded by desert scenery, Mountain Cave Suites carved into the sandstone, secluded Mountain Crevice Villas hidden within the rock face or dramatic Cliff-Hanging Villas that seemingly float above the canyon below.
  • Designed by acclaimed Canadian firm Studio Paolo Ferrari, the interiors are understated but far from simple. Raw concrete, limestone, wood and bronze appear throughout, alongside hundreds of custom-designed furniture and lighting pieces. Floor-to-ceiling windows do the rest, drawing the rugged wadi scenery deep into the rooms.
  • The Cave Suites — stretching across a roomy 1,400 square feet, including the private terrace — offer a real sense of drama. Carved directly into the mountainside, these two-person retreats combine cocooning interiors with skyline views and private plunge pools with complete privacy.
  • The three-bedroom Royal Villa showcases Desert Rock's ambitious vision at its most lavish. Designed as a secluded retreat at the edge of the valley, the sprawling 11,916-square-foot residence combines dramatic architecture, multiple indoor-outdoor living spaces and uninterrupted desert views for a level of privacy and immersion rarely found elsewhere in the region.
