Rosewood Schloss Fuschl

Lake Fuschl’s reimagined royal retreat
VERIFIED LUXURY
Perched on the serene shores of Lake Fuschl near Salzburg, Rosewood Schloss Fuschl’s setting feels like a character in its own right: a 15th-century-castle-turned-luxury-retreat that still echoes with centuries of Austrian history (it’s no wonder it was the setting for the 1950s film trilogy about 19th-century Empress Elisabeth of Austria, aka Sissi). Built originally as a royal hunting lodge in 1461, the property reopened under Rosewood in 2024 following an exacting two-year restoration that honors its heritage while updating it for today’s discerning traveler.

Inside, 98 guest rooms blend contemporary comfort with historic details like hand-painted minibars inspired by the four seasons and original architectural elements unearthed in the castle’s tower. The Asaya Spa — with indoor/outdoor infinity pools and mountain views — and direct access to the lake at the Schloss Fuschl See Club make the surrounding landscape part of the experience.

Culinary offerings span six venues, where local alpine classics meet creative riffs, supported by one of the region’s most storied wine cellars.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Many of Rosewood Schloss Fuschl’s rooms and suites — especially the Deluxe Heritage Suite and Kaiser Franz Joseph House — open onto dramatic panoramas of the lake with plaster and woodwork that subtly reference the castle’s centuries-old heritage. Some of the standalone chalets even include private saunas and fireplaces overlooking the water.
  • The Asaya Spa blends alpine herbal traditions with modern biohacking wellness programming. Combined with indoor/outdoor infinity pools and multiple saunas, it’s a holistic retreat made for lingering.
  • More than a beach club, See Club also offers lakeside dining. It blends Mediterranean-leaning light fare and fresh Lake Fuschl fish with cabana lounging overlooking the water.
  • A guided hike with the resident herbalist teaches you to identify alpine herbs and transform them into salts or remedies, offering an immersive way to connect with the Salzkammergut landscape beyond pretty vistas.
  • Beyond onsite activities, bespoke excursions include private after-hours tours of regional galleries or visits to century-old ateliers like the Kirchtag umbrella workshop.

The Restaurants

  • Schloss Restaurant (the Austria hotel’s flagship dining room) is where Salzkammergut classics meet creative reinterpretations — think blunzn (blood sausage) gyoza or saddle of Mattigtal lamb complemented by pours from the extensive wine cellar.
  • Anchored by a 15th-century fireplace and fall murals hand-painted by local artist Marie Hartig, Schloss Bar serves impeccable cocktails alongside local schnapps and small bites, with the adjacent Whisky Room offering an even cozier spirit-forward hideout.
  • Seeterrasse offers casual yet refined lakeside dining where “mountain to the sea” dishes, ranging from steakhouse-level burgers to bouillabaisse with Alpine prawns, are enjoyed with unobstructed views of Lake Fuschl.
  • Sisi Teesalon is a tranquil, residential-style lounge inspired by the castle’s Sissi film legacy, where artisanal pastries, tea blends and the original Schloss Fuschl torte (created in 1992) are part of an unhurried pause.
  • Rustic yet polished, Vinothek is a wine refuge that specializes in Austrian vintages paired with warming fondue or hot pot.
