Athina Luxury Suites

A cliff-hugging hideaway above the Aegean
VERIFIED LUXURY
At Athina Luxury Suites, 32 whitewashed accommodations cling to Santorini's dramatic caldera rim above Fira, the island’s capital. In truth, it's hard to imagine a more quintessential Santorini setting. While the capital buzzes with cafés, restaurants and cruise ship visitors throughout the day, the hotel feels remarkably secluded.

The suites embrace a classic Cycladic aesthetic, pairing pale plaster tones and handwoven textiles with thoughtfully selected furnishings that lend each accommodation its own character. Some take inspiration from Santorini's traditional cave dwellings, while many opens onto private terraces with plunge pools or hot tubs with jets overlooking the Aegean.

A heated infinity pool, partially sheltered from the sun beneath the cliffside, offers another spectacular vantage point complete with a swim-up bar and sweeping caldera views.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Athina’s approach to service embraces the Greek tradition of philoxenia (meaning warm hospitality). Before arrival, guests complete a detailed questionnaire that allows the team to shape the stay around their interests, from securing coveted restaurant bookings and spa appointments to arranging private tours, wine tastings, yacht charters and helicopter excursions.
  • One of the hotel’s greatest assets is its location. Set directly on Fira's caldera-edge pedestrian path, the hotel puts you within easy walking distance of landmarks such as the Metropolitan Orthodox Cathedral, the Museum of Prehistoric Thera and the cable car station. Step outside and you can follow the cobbled walkway north toward Firostefani and Oia or spend the evening exploring Fira's bustling collection of shops, restaurants and bars — all without needing a car.
  • A sight to behold and a joy to swim in, the heated cliffside pool creates a dramatic sense of floating above the Aegean. Early-morning laps and golden-hour cocktails feel like private moments in a postcard-perfect setting.
  • The hotel’s restaurant, Esperisma, showcases a concise but carefully executed menu of Mediterranean- and Greek-inspired dishes crafted from local, seasonal ingredients. Think beef or crayfish tartare, a deconstructed interpretation of traditional stuffed vine leaves (dolmades) and succulent local lamb. The Santorini hotel also operates a sister restaurant, Rizes Gastro Taverna, just a short stroll away, focused more on a farm-to-table philosophy with an evolving seasonal menu.
  • Among Santorini's most coveted room categories are its cave-style suites, carved into the volcanic cliffs that define the island's dramatic caldera. Athina's Grand Cave Suite delivers a particularly indulgent take on the concept, pairing traditional curved architecture with a lofted king bedroom, generous living area, indoor and outdoor whirlpools, and stunning caldera views.

The Rooms

  • Athina's interiors draw inspiration from Santorini's volcanic landscape and architectural heritage but avoid many of the island's more predictable design clichés. Throughout the property, softly sculpted walls, rounded forms and muted natural tones create a sense of calm, while pale timber, brushed brass accents and textured finishes add warmth and character. Rather than competing with the scenery outside, the interiors act as a quiet frame for the caldera views beyond.
  • The luxury hotel offers more than a dozen types of suites, ranging from intimate Cozy Suites to the 1,507-square-foot Royal Suite. While each is individually furnished, all feature outdoor space with caldera views and a made-to-order breakfast. Depending on the category, you may find cave-style architecture, outdoor whirlpools, plunge pools, lofted layouts or multiple bedrooms designed for families and groups.
  • One of the most lavish accommodations, The Black Rock Honeymoon Suite combines Santorini's signature cave-style architecture with a private terrace and alfresco hot tub overlooking the caldera. Dark volcanic stone accents contrast with crisp white interiors, creating a romantic retreat designed for couples.
  • The in-room touches read like a who's who of European luxury. French bath amenities by Hermès and Guerlain sit alongside Guy Laroche linens and towels, while chic outdoor furniture from Spanish design brand Vondom and pieces by Greece's Estilo Leontiadis furniture round out this collection of comforts.
  • King-sized beds fitted with handmade, eco-friendly mattresses and crisp linens invite lazy mornings, with blackout curtains and soundproofing creating a restful environment despite the hotel's central location. Other practical touches, such as plentiful power outlets and discreet climate controls, are seamlessly integrated into the design.
