Long before it became one of the island's most alluring adults-only retreats, the estate formed part of a “prison without walls” where inmates served their sentences immersed in the surrounding countryside rather than behind bars.

Today, that same landscape inspires a different kind of restoration. Overflowing with character and warmth, the former estate now feels like a rustic-chic Mediterranean retreat, with earth-toned stucco, timber pergolas and cascading bougainvillea softening its historic stonework. Ivory-toned rooms with pastel accents — many with private balconies — keep the focus on the sea, while the hotel's private beach remains blissfully peaceful even in high summer.

One of the greatest pleasures of staying at La Villa del Re is its setting. Rather than competing with Costa Rei's powdery white sands and crystalline waters, the resort draws on traditional Sardinian architecture, pairing native stone and pale limewashed walls with breezy open-air spaces that flow naturally toward a long stretch of private beach.
Whether you prefer the pool or the beach, La Villa del Re has both covered. The infinity pool gazes out over the sea, surrounded by shaded loungers, a pool bar and private gazebos available to rent. Just below, a white-sand private beach offers another idyllic spot to spend the day, with loungers, umbrellas and attentive staff on hand with refreshments.
A stay at the Sardinia hotel offers a rare chance to slow down, but there are plenty of ways to venture beyond your lounger when the mood strikes. Complimentary watersports equipment like pedal boats, SUP boards and canoes are available, while the concierge can arrange everything from private island-hopping boat trips to scuba diving, horseback riding and off-road jeep excursions.
At intimate alfresco restaurant, Le Palme, expect sea views and tasting menus showcasing Sardinian cuisine through the island's finest seafood and artisanal ingredients. Reservations are essential, as the restaurant opens for just two hours each evening.

The Blue Sea Junior Suite is the one to splurge on, thanks to its private garden complete with an outdoor deck, in-ground hot tub and plush loungers just steps from the beach.
The spacious bathrooms are finished in warm, sand-toned marble and come equipped with oversized walk-in rain showers featuring chromotherapy — a color-light therapy designed to enhance relaxation — along with Bvlgari amenities.
