100 Princes Street

Scotland’s exclusive stay with Edinburgh Castle views
VERIFIED LUXURY

Stepping over the threshold of The Red Carnation Hotel Collection’s 100 Princes Street, you wouldn’t be off base for thinking you’ve just walked into a centuries-old members club. Set along Edinburgh’s coveted Princes Street, this 2024-debuted boutique hotel draws design inspiration from its former life as the headquarters for the Royal Over-Seas League, a members club founded in 1910. Oil paintings depict gigantic ships at sea, while gilded 18th- and 19th-century lookalike furnishings dot tartan-clad rooms outfitted with intricately carved fireplaces.

This meticulous attention to detail was overseen by Toni Tollman, daughter of family-owned Red Carnation’s late patriarch Stanley Tollman, who ensured the property maintained its Old World gentlemen’s club atmosphere while continuing to cater to discerning travelers of the modern era. Whiskey tastings, afternoon tea and Scottish comfort classics are all on the menu at 100 Princes Street, as are stunning views of Edinburgh Castle from just about every room.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Each of the luxury hotel’s 30 guest rooms and suites offer slightly different décor, but all feature luxe marble bathrooms equipped with the hotel’s own brand of toiletries, eye-catching coffee table books on Scotland and locally inspired minibars. The tartan- and velvet-covered walls provide a cozy retreat from the bustle of Princes Street below.
  • A standout of a stay at 100 Princes Street is the Edinburgh Castle views. Watching the sunset behind the city’s most iconic landmark all without leaving the comfort of your room is memorable.
  • Signature dining room The Wallace showcases Scottish comfort food with a contemporary twist. The throughline here is locally sourced produce that plays a starring role in everything from a full Scottish breakfast to a house burger made with Aberdeen Angus beef and whiskey onions.
  • In addition to the castle just outside, the hotel puts you in the middle of the action on Princes Street, the city’s main thoroughfare and shopping destination. Old Town, the National Museum of Scotland, The Writers' Museum and Edinburgh Waverley Train Station are all within a 15-minute walk.
  • The hotel curates a great list of personalized Scottish activities. Go behind the scenes with Scottish designer Araminta Campbell, who did the tartan patterns for the property, and commission your own pieces; design your own gin at a Scottish distillery; create a traditional kilt; or concoct a scent at Kingdom Scotland, the country’s first luxury perfume house.

The Look

  • Befitting an Edinburgh hotel, tartan plays a starring role in the design of 100 Princes Street. Tollman commissioned Campbell to create the five custom designs that adorn the property.
  • While scaling the stairs to your room, look out for an intricate hand-painted mural running the length of the gallery. The five-story piece pays homage to Scottish exploration and the hotel’s history as a gathering place of the well-traveled.
  • The 12-seat private tasting room Ghillie’s Pantry is a haven for Scotch lovers with more than 100 bottles lining its black-and-bronze accented walls. While sipping on your favorite spirit, be sure to look up to admire another hand-painted mural depicting the night sky by London-based art studio Croxford and Saunders.
  • In a nod to the hotel’s history as an explorer’s club, 100 Princes Street features some exotic décor. Bronze lamps disguised as palm trees, vases inspired by Chinese porcelain and oil paintings depicting vibrant-hued macaws pepper the posh property.
