Rive Gauche

Modern French dining with a southwestern Chinese twist
VERIFIED LUXURY

Tucked inside The PuXuan Hotel and Spa in the heart of Beijing, Rive Gauche puts a modern spin on classic French cuisine. The kitchen blends traditional techniques with the bold flavors of southwestern China, giving familiar dishes a regional twist. This fresh approach is a perfect match for one of the city’s most design-forward hotels.

Inspired by Paris’ Left Bank, the restaurant is a peaceful retreat from the commotion of the nearby Wangfujing Street. You can opt for an à la carte menu or a seasonal six-course, Yunnan-inspired tasting journey, highlighting the region's markets and landscapes. The experience is as much about presentation and precision as it is about the pairings.

Whether enjoying lunch, dinner or a drink at the stylish bar, Rive Gauche is a unique culinary experience unto itself, reimagining French cuisine through local ingredients to carve out its own place in Beijing’s dining scene.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The newly renovated Beijing restaurant, reopened in June 2024, features a chic, contemporary design with a mix of open dining spaces, a private terrace and a dynamic bar zone.
  • While dining at Rive Gauche, you might find yourself seated beside art collectors, designers and culture-savvy locals. The PuXuan Hotel is known for its strong focus on art and design, curating exhibitions that connect visual culture with deeper themes of place and identity, which carries through in the restaurant.
  • You can stick to French classics or explore something more seasonal. Whether it’s wagyu beef tartare or lobster with Yunnan MiXian noodles, each dish reflects a clear throughline of technique and thoughtful composition.
  • At the back of the restaurant, a rotating art exhibition showcases contemporary works inspired by Yunnan’s culture, adding an extra layer of visual storytelling to the dining experience.
  • An elegant yet unpretentious dining atmosphere combining Parisian chic with Chinese sensibilities makes Rive Gauche an ideal setting for both intimate dinners and business meals.

The Food

  • Every meal begins with freshly baked bread served with three housemade butters: bean curd, plant-based and Beijing duck sauce. Each brings a distinct East-meets-West flavor to the table, setting the stage for the blended dishes that follow.
  • Expect traditional French dishes like the foie gras in a pistachio tart shell with plum wine-infused mousseline and dark plum jam, soupe à l'oignon (onion soup) or M7 wagyu beef steak.
  • Described as a journey “from Yunnan’s rice terraces to the French table,” the Yunnan-inspired tasting menu features standout dishes such as aged duck breast served with Hani fermented soybeans, duck leg confit, bait cake and a rich mushroom duck jus, along with a tangy sour fish soup with marble goby that balances brightness and spice.
  • Desserts like the Yunnan coffee mousse with rose jam and tamarind ice cream are a playful yet refined finale that balances traditional French artistry with Chinese influence.
