The Ritz-Carlton, Nanjing

A landmark in historic Nanjing’s CBD
VERIFIED LUXURY
Although it opened recently, The Ritz-Carlton, Nanjing quickly became a landmark in the modern central business district of the ancient imperial capital.

Located on the upper floors of luxury mall Deji Plaza (one of Nanjing’s signature luxury addresses, it’s home to shops from Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Gucci as well as an ice rink and IMAX movie theater), The Ritz-Carlton, Nanjing offers a quiet and tasteful bird’s-eye view of the city from floor-to-ceiling windows in each of the 295 rooms and 32 suites. All accommodations in this skyscraper jutting out from downtown Nanjing’s Xinjiekou business district overlook either the city skyline, Xuanwu Lake or Nanjing’s famed Purple Mountain to the east.

While the city’s history spans 2,500 years, the modern-day Nanjing boasts an impressive array of skyscrapers and transport infrastructure. This fascinating dichotomy of old and new can be seen everywhere from the luxurious public spaces to the lavishly designed private units. Like the city, the rooms at The Ritz-Carlton, Nanjing put a modern face on ancient Chinese traditions, with wall coverings recalling bamboo screens and ceiling lamps that take a modern twist on customary Chinese lanterns.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The Club Lounge on the 58th floor is a hotel highlight, serving five meals per day and open 24 hours. Through the lounge’s panoramic windows, you’re offered a calm and peaceful spot from which to feast on the big-city views below.
  • Nanjing was named a City of Literature by UNESCO in 2019. In celebration of the city’s history of letters, the hotel has placed books on literature, art, history and the city itself in each of the rooms.
  • Nanjing is famous for its unique yuhua (yuhua translates to English as “rain flower”) tea, which has a delicate aroma and earthy flavor. The Ritz-Carlton, Nanjing has embraced this special local ingredient in its Yuhua Garden signature cocktail, which pairs the tea and gin.
  • The hotel’s Lotus Lantern Ritual is held at sunset in The Lobby Lounge. The ceremony’s music, lotus lanterns and authentic local snacks are all intended to symbolize the Qinhuai River, known as the mother river of Nanjing and the inspiration for numerous important works of literature.
  • The Ritz-Carlton Spa features eight treatment rooms, including a couple’s suite. Its signature treatments use mineral rich Yuhua stones that have been polished in the Yangtze River.

Nearby Attractions

  • Xuanwu Lake is one of the most popular sites for locals to gather, enjoy boat rides of the glassy surface of the lake or take selfies surrounded by cherry blossoms when Sakura show their colors in March. Nanjing is made special by its unique combination of old and new, and here is the perfect position from which to appreciate its millennia-long history by hiking a one-mile section of the city’s ancient city wall from Xuanwu Gate and seeing Nanjing’s ultra-modern skyline.
  • Visitors to Purple Mountain (Zijin Shan in Mandarin) to the east of Nanjing will feel they are far from the bustle of city life as they hike the winding trails that lead up the 4,843-foot mountain. The mountain is home to numerous shrines and mausoleums, including the grand tomb of Sun Yat-Sen, known as “the father of modern China.”
  • Niushoushan Cultural Park is a peaceful, Buddhist-themed destination on a mountain in the southern suburbs of Nanjing. With a shrine containing a bone from the skull of Sakyamuni (Buddha), it’s a holy place for Buddhists. Non-Buddhist visitors, however, will also be impressed by the scale of the breathtaking Foding Palace, with its rotating jade statue of a reclining Buddha or the nine-tiered Usnisa Pagoda.
  • Nanjing’s rich history has been recorded and celebrated in an array of impressive museums. Younger visitors might enjoy the Nanjing Paleontology Museum, one of the largest museums dedicated to dinosaur bones and ancient fossils in the world.
  • Those yearning for a taste of Nanjing’s unique tea culture should visit Lao Cui, an old teahouse inside the ancient city walls.
